Foreword From The President
Three Days of Scientific Meeting
20-22 September 2019
Greetings to one and all,
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend our 1st Biennial South East Asian Regional Congress on Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in conjunction with our annual MATCVS meeting between 20th to 22nd September 2019.
This regional meeting was first proposed by my Thai counterpart Dr. Pranya Sakiyalak to engage our local experts together and see what we can bring to the table in terms of improving our regional CVTS services. We agreed to have this regional meeting every 2 years preferably in conjunction with a SEA country’s local scientific meeting to reduce the burden of additional conference in an environment in which many countries have already have an on-going local, regional and international conferences and courses.
We hope to look into new areas of formal collaborations and training as we have many experts in various sub-specialty fields which can reduce d cost of training of our young surgeons. During the meeting we will set panel discussions on regional issues for example early Lung Cancer screening, the need for a regional database, R&D and other pertinent issues concerning our SEA region.
As this is going to be our first meeting, and for logistical reasons, we decided to only collaborate with our colleagues from 3 countries, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia to help organize this meeting with us. I am happy to say that their responses are overwhelming. If this meeting proves to be successful, then we will invite our other SEA regional partners in to be part of this organisation as well. And of course, all our friends from the region and around the world are invited and welcomed to the meeting.
I am excited to announce that this year’s biennial meeting will be held at the DOUBLETREE HILTON Hotel at our UNESCO HERITAGE Historical City of Melaka. It is a great destination for conferences, family outings, food and historical site visits. Please come with your family and we have arranged for transports to the various sites of interest.
As we give you ample time for visits, we will also conduct a very interesting scientific meeting too. On the first day, we have the SKILLSLAB SEA with emphasis on training and self-evaluating our young surgeons, senior surgeons, and also, our Anesthesiology colleagues and of course our paramedical personnel. This year, the focus will be on Coronary Anastomoses, skills on off-pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (OPCAB) (Dr.Jamesraj, (India) and computational analysis of our Coronary Flows using a Japanese system looking at using various modalities such as computational flow dynamics to provide us with a detailed analysis n report. We also have heart failure therapy session with invited speaker Dr. Timmy Au, (Hong Kong) and a session on CALS (Cardiothoracic Advance Life Support).
For the 2nd Day, we will give emphasis on free papers, a panel discussion session, Young Investigator Award and the “Razali Hashim Memorial Lecture”. This prestigious lecture will be given by the highly respectable Dr. Tirone David. The cultural opening ceremony will be graced by The Governor of Melaka himself. On the Saturday night, we will have a grand Gala Dinner at a rooftop sky bar restaurant with good music and shows overlooking the city of Melaka. DO NOT MISS THIS!
For the final day, we are fortunate to have a session on Aortic surgery in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh with eloquent speakers such as Dr. Tirone David (Canada), Mr. Geoff Tsang (UK), Dr. Sun Li-Zhong (China), Dr. Jacob Jamesraj (India), and Dr. Timmy Au (Hong Kong).
Before I end, I would like to thank all my friends and colleagues for all the help and support given in organizing this meeting. The tag line this year is “Gathering of the Hearts”, similar to the Sufi meeting – “Gathering of the Birds” emphasizing purity of our hearts in wanting to come together and make a difference for the betterment of our future. We owe it to our children, our people and ourselves to do this. So, keep your schedule free between the 20th to the 22nd of September 2019 and see you in Melaka for an unforgettable and exciting event.
Have a nice day.

About Melaka City
This quaint city was crowned a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. With its abundance of breathtaking sights, and rich heritage, Malacca is easy to get around on foot or trishaw to explore the many places that makes it unique.
Melaka (also known as Malacca) is a historical city where it all began for Malaysia. As a powerful and influential city in the region, Melaka was the first Malaysian city to be colonised by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, the British and the Japanese. As the unofficial historic capital of Malaysia, Malacca’s most prominent contribution to the Malaysian cultural landscape is the Baba-Nyonya or Peranakan culture. Possessing an eclectic blend of customs, traditions, food and lifestyle, the Peranakan still thrives in Malacca with a mix of old and new with historical buildings standing side by side with ultra modern shopping centres.
